Empowering Gender Equality and Civic Engagement in Uganda: ACFODE and Swedish Foundation Collaborate

The under-representation of women in political leadership in Uganda remains a pressing issue, rooted in institutional, structural, cultural, and attitudinal barriers that deter women from engaging in public life. Addressing these challenges requires a multifaceted approach, including increased awareness and education on democracy, governance, women's rights, and civic participation.

In response to this imperative, Action for Development (ACFODE) has embarked on a groundbreaking project titled “Enhancing Women and Female Youth Awareness and Political Participation in North and South Western Uganda,” aimed at empowering participants with essential knowledge on gender dynamics, women's participation in politics, leadership, and decision-making.

ACFODE   has conducted Training of Trainers (TOT) workshops targeting duty bearers and community leaders in Districts of Kyegegwa, Kaberamaido, Amolatar and Kamwenge reaching over 120 specific individuals serving as societal role models holding key positions within the communities across all the Districts between 17th to 19th October 2023.

Sessions were diverse and engaging, covering topics such as gender concepts, women's rights, barriers to political participation, and enhancing the participants’ understanding and proficiency in facilitating civic education, and skills in adult education. Discussions tackled legal frameworks supporting women's participation in political leadership, with participants identifying cultural norms, lack of awareness, and economic dependency as key barriers.

Emphasis was laid on the importance of leadership roles and citizen participation beyond electoral processes. Recommendations emerged, including promoting girl child education, sensitizing men to support women's agendas, and creating platforms for citizen engagement.

The overarching goal was to equip participants with the skills and knowledge needed to conduct grassroots civic education, particularly promoting women's political participation, leadership, and gender equality.
Upon completing the workshops, participants were tasked with developing plans to disseminate the acquired knowledge and skills within their communities.

This collaborative effort between ACFODE and the Swedish Foundation for Human Rights underscores a commitment to fostering gender equality and civic engagement in Uganda. By empowering community leaders with the tools to advocate for change and promote inclusive decision-making processes, this project aims to pave the way for a more equitable and participatory society.
